First held in 1867, the Belmont Stakes is an annual horse race held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The race is an American Grade I Thoroughbred horse race and features 3-yearold Thoroughbreds. A Thoroughbred is a breed of horses that is popular because of its ability to race as a result of their combination of agility, speed, and spirit. Colts and geldings in the Belmont horse race carry a weight of 126-lbs (57-kiliograms) while the fillies carry 121-lbs (55 kilograms). The Belmont race track is 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) long.
