Having “gone green” since it went under the ownership of Geoff and Shannon Ellis, The Willcox and The Restaurant at the Willcox were awarded the State’s top certification this past winter for the highest level of sustainability Palmetto designation offered by the South Carolina Green Hospitality Alliance. The coveted Three Palmetto certification was given to both the hotel and the restaurant at the Willcox, only the fourth hotel and the first restaurant in the state to reach the top. Douglas O’Flaherty, director of operations of the South Carolina Hospitality Association, acknowledged that no other establishment in South Carolina has ever been awarded six Palmettos.

The Willcox grew out of a catering business started in 1897 by Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Willcox. In the 1920s and 1930s, the guest book read like the New York Social Register – Vanderbilt, Harriman, Pulitzer, Iselin, Astor. Even Franklin Delano Roosevelt stayed at The Willcox – his private railway car would pull up to the back door and he would enter unannounced.
