Aiken Horse — 2010
During the gilded days of the Winter Colony, Aiken was known for its wonderful hotels, especially The Willcox. The Willcox grew out of a catering business started in 1897 by Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Willcox. Over the years, the Willcoxes converted their home into a sumptuous inn that became the social nucleus of Aiken’s winter visitors. In the 1920s and 1930s, the guest book read like the New York Social Register – Vanderbilt, Harriman, Pulitzer, Iselin, Astor. Even Franklin Delano Roosevelt stayed at The Willcox – his private railway car would pull up to the back door and he would enter unannounced.
